Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty

  Duration: 1 hr

The ageing process can bring with it all manner of inconveniences and dramatically affect the way we look, thus impacting our confidence and sense of well-being. The very delicate upper and lower eyelid tissues can succumb to the ageing process quicker than other areas of the face, and this area is usually one of the first, to show our true age.

Sagging skin, wrinkles, and drooping eyelids can make us constantly look tired and give the impression that we are older than we in fact are. The application of makeup can become difficult, and no matter how much we rest and hydrate ourselves, we can still appear tired.

At Dr Veerle Rotsaert’s clinic in Belgravia, London, we offer blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to create a more refreshed and wide-awake appearance, through the surgical and permanent removal of loose skin and sometimes excess fat in the eyelids.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for blepharoplasty?

Before any surgical or, indeed, non-surgical procedure takes place, we will always request that you attend a no-obligation consultation here at the clinic so that we can discuss your concerns, goals and expectations. We’ll examine your facial features and check your medical history to confirm that blepharoplasty will be the most appropriate and safest procedure for your unique requirements. Dr Rotsaert will explain the treatment, aftercare, downtime, and expected results in detail so that you are armed with all the relevant, pertinent information and advice that you need to make an informed and educated decision on whether to proceed. If both you and Dr Rotsaert are satisfied that eyelid surgery will be effective for you, you can book your surgery date.

Why should I have eyelid surgery?

There are many reasons why our patients consider blepharoplasty:-
  • Drooping eyelids to the extent that vision is affected
  • Puffy eyebags and loose and baggy eyelids, leading to the appearance of premature ageing
  • Excessive wrinkles on the upper and lower eyelids
There are several causes of puffy, sagging and wrinkled eyelids and these include:-
  • The natural ageing process
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress
  • Gravity
  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Substance abuse (alcohol / drugs)
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of hydration
  • Genetics

What happens during eyelid surgery?

A blepharoplasty is performed under a general or local anaesthetic and this will depend on what Dr Rotsaert advises. In a typical procedure, surgical incisions will be made along the natural lines of your eyelids, in the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids to minimise any scarring. These cuts may extend a small way into the crow’s feet at the corner of the eyes. Through these incisions, the excess skin, fat and any lax muscle is removed. If you have a pocket of fat beneath your lower eyelids, this fat can be removed via the inside of the lower eyelid without extra skin. Once the excess skin, fat and muscle are removed, the incisions will be closed with sutures.

Will I get scarring with blepharoplasty?

As with all surgical procedures which involve incisions and suturing, you will have some small scars. However, as the incisions are made following the natural lines and creases of your eyelids, these can easily be disguised and will fade with time. Dr Rotsaert meticulously plans incisions so that scars are hidden well. This helps to make them virtually imperceptible.

What is the downtime, following a blepharoplasty procedure?

You will need to take around a week off work following your eyelid surgery, are allowed to drive again a week after surgery, and probably experience a full recovery after two weeks. There will be some swelling, possible bruising and tenderness, following this procedure, so you should rest well and avoid any activities which could compromise the healing process. Full aftercare instructions will be provided to you, following your procedure and you will be asked to make a return appointment, so we can check that everything is healing as it should be and the results are as desired.

When will I see the results?

As the excess skin, fat and luxated muscle is surgically removed from your eyebags, you will see the results straight away. However, you must take into consideration that there will be a period of swelling, bruising and tenderness, following the procedure, so allow around 2 weeks for this to subside, before seeing the optimum results at anytime between 3 – 6 months.

Additional Information

After surgery there will be some swelling, bruising and irritation or dry eyes. This can all be controlled with cold compresses and special ointments. During a consultation, Dr. Rotsaert will go through everything with you and decide on which approach is the best one for you.

Most patients return to work and are comfortable going out in public within a week to 10 days after surgery. Patients should refrain from strenuous exercise and physical activities for at least two to three weeks. During the recovery process, it is important for patients to get some rest and take it easy.

After blepharoplasty you’ll look refreshed, less tired and have a more open look. Friends and family might notice you appear less sad, smoother and younger. Dr. Rotsaert meticulously plans incisions so scars will be hidden in natural creases to conceal them as much as possible making them virtually imperceptible.

By removing excess skin and fat your eyelids will appear smoother and your gaze will look brighter and younger.
